This collection of images is taken from the book 'Hungry Planet: What the World Eats' by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio and shows how much processed food has taken over many nations meal-times as well as the huge difference in the volume of food we consume. Although we already know a lot of this these images really do tell a thousand words. The portraits feature pictures of each family with their weekly shop.

New study shows high rates of vaccines don’t correlate to low infant mortality

A new study from Human & Experimental Toxicology reveals that countries that have the most vaccinations – such as the US, Italy, Greece and the UK - also have the highest infant death rates. The United States has the most intensive programme with 26 vaccines that a child is supposed to have in its first year – and it also has the worst mortality level, with six out of every thousand infants dying.

Stockholm school fighting gender bias with no ‘him or her’

Since becoming a mum to a girl and a boy I have become all to aware of the fundamental differences between the sexes but I have also wondered how much society shapes those differences. Essentially the age old debate of nature V nurture. Associated Press have just reported on a school in Stockholm who does things very differently in an attempt to avoid such stereotyping. At the "Egalia" preschool, staff avoid using words like "him" or "her" and address the 33 kids as "friends" rather than girls and boys.

Water quality ‘improving’ at UK beaches just in time for half term

Bathing water quality at UK beaches has reached one of its highest levels in the past 25 years, according to the latest edition of the Good Beach Guide. The Marine Conservation Society said 461 sites gained its top "recommended" award this year, 42 more than in 2010. But 46 beaches failed to meet basic European standards so it is worth doing some research to find the cleanest beaches near you.
