Sorry seems to be the hardest word

1 Comment 18 March 2010

Asking a child to apologise when they've done wrong can be a tricky thing. You can't force someone to do something they don't want to do, otherwise you end up in a stand off. "Say sorry to Tommy" "No, I don't want to" "Right then, you will not be allowed any friends over to play for 2 weeks" (or any other punishments you can think of on the spot) "Sorry, Tommy". Does this actually teach a child to say sorry and mean it?

Do children need time out or in?

3 Comments 11 March 2010

I went through a really difficult patch with my eldest daughter recently. Tantrums, tears, defiance, lying are some of the things that have reared their head. Whatever I said she just tuned me out, we were completely disconnected and she felt out of reach. Frankly, I found it quite scary, she's only just coming up for 4, imagine how it could be in another 10 years?

What’s wrong with bribing your children?

No Comments 04 March 2010

I’ve recently become aware of how much I use bribery – and the occasional threat - to get my three-year-old son to do what I want: ice cream for eating his tea, a DVD for playing nicely with his sister. My friends agree, when you’re in a hurry or your child is having a meltdown, the only thing with instant impact is giving or taking away something they really care about – pipe down or Buzz Lightyear gets it!

Conventional schools failing your child? Consider the alternatives

No Comments 26 February 2010

We are anxiously awaiting the results of our primary school application. We live in an area with a high proportion of young families where schools are oversubscribed. This year, our first choice school had 45 places of which 30 went to siblings leaving just 15 places. We been researching other options and come across some interesting education alternatives.

Swine flu jab axed for under 5′s

No Comments 23 February 2010

The Department of Health has revealed it is to scrap plans for healthy children under five to continue to be vaccinated against swine flu, just three months after urging GPs to vaccinate more than three million youngsters against the outbreak. In a major U-Turn, the Chief Medical Officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, revealed the programme of vaccinating healthy children would wrap up at the end of next month, although GPs have been told to continue to try vaccinate children until then. Extending the vaccination campaign to children has proved a disappointment, with just 17% of children in England having had the vaccine according to the latest uptake figures.

Charity Beat says teach children self esteem

No Comments 22 February 2010

Children as young as eight should be taught about self-esteem in a bid to stop them developing eating disorders, a charity has said. Youngsters need to learn emotional resilience and tactics for dealing with images of the "perfect body" in the media, said Beat. It wants lessons on the issue to form part of personal, social and health education (PSHE) in schools. The call is one of several commitments published in a new manifesto urging the next government to tackle eating disorders.

It’s a girl thing. Part 2: Body image

No Comments 04 February 2010

Body image is a hot topic amongst girls and women . Too fat, too thin, big boobs, no boobs, too short, too tall, the list goes on. A recent 2 year study by the Children's Society found that children were unhappy with their appearance and levels of confidence. Using a pioneering approach looking at the views of young people instead of focusing on issues adults considered important, researchers put around 100 questions to approx 7,000 children aged 10 to 15.
