London's mayor Boris Johnson has set out his plans for London to become Britain’s first plastic-bag-free city in time for the Olympics in 2012, to reduce litter and landfill waste. Shoppers will be given greater incentives to bring their own reusable bags, and supermarkets may be encouraged to charge for the bags they give out. The Republic of Ireland cut plastic bag consumption by 90% when it introduced a 15% charge per bag in 2002. The average person in Ireland used 27 bags in 2008, compared with 220 per person in Britain.
