If you like me, enjoy an occasional warm frothy coffee you might be interested to know that not all coffee shops are equal when it comes to protecting the environment and generally behaving in an ethical and sustainable manner. Walk along most highstreet's and you will likely be greeted with the big three coffee shop chains in the UK – Starbucks, Costa or Caffè Nero. These 3 dominate the market, Costa has a 37% share, Starbucks on 23% and Caffè Nero on 14%, with the rest a few per cent each (although McDonalds sells more coffee than any other company in the UK). If you can tear yourself away from the big 3 you can find alternatives that are often 100% fairtrade and with many other excellent credentials.

Are they b*stards? new ethical shopping app launched

The Good Shopping Guide has launched a new ethical shopping app for (initially) £2.99 revealing the good, bad and ugly of the world’s leading brands, (based on the the world’s best-selling ethical shopping guide which retails at £14.95). The app allows consumers to get up to date advice on the ethical status of goods and services as they shop through their mobile phone. 10% of net revenue will go to Friends of the Earth.

A Which? study of 14 household items including laundry tablets, toilet cleaners and nappies found almost half were marketed with green claims that the companies did not support with convincing evidence. In response Tesco had agreed to change the packaging of its Tesco Naturally toilet cleaner as a result. Experts who examined Tesco, Sainsbury's, Green Force and Ecover toilet cleaners believed each had at least one green claim that was not proven by the manufacturer's evidence.

Nokia handsets Despite the fact that Nokia’s handsets contain no recycled materials, the company has strong recycling schemes, its “recharge complete” reminder feature and elimination of PVC won it the 2009 award for Outstanding Environmental Contribution at Mobile World Congress. All the company’s digital phones are about 80% recyclable.

Now we have heard it all…Borders are planning to trash unsold books

The re-use, recycle, reduce matra has obviously been lost on the big cheeses at Borders who according to reports are planning to bin unsold books. With Haiti as a backdrop this awful corporate behaviour beggars belief. In the wake of the recent story that H&M and Walmart have been ditching unsold clothing in bins behind their shops, some Borders employees have outed their company for plans to trash tens of thousands of books when they close over 200 store locations by the end of January.
